VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Intelligence Specialist 1st Class Kalil Negronrodriguez, a 2012 Poinciana High School graduate, and a native from San Juan, Puerto Rico, currently serves as an instructor at Information Warfare Training Command (IWTC) Virginia Beach.
Negronrodriguez enlisted in the Navy following high school in 2012, and upon his graduation from basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, he reported to Intelligence Specialist “A” School. From there, he reported to his first duty station with Strike Fighter Squadron 211. During this tour, he was deployed to U.S. 5th Fleet in support of Operation Inherent Resolve with the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group.
In his current position, he trains Sailors and officers for various roles within the Navy’s information warfare community. He provided over 254 hours of instruction to 98 Imagery and Strike “C” School students across three separate courses. Students often commend his ability to effectively fuse fleet experience and expectations with the course curriculum; his passion for teaching is evident to all. He selflessly devoted 63 of his off-duty hours to provide weekend remediation training to more than 32 students, resulting in a 94 percent retest pass rate.
In addition to his instructor duties, Negronrodriguez is one of the key players in developing the Intelligence Specialist 2025 (IS 2025) geospatial intelligence curriculum. He has taken the lead on managing curriculum requirements, as well as planning both daily and long–term objectives for the course. Additionally, he is responsible for verifying the proper required resources are pushed through the correct channels, and also schedules and coordinates all Master Training Specialist boards, increasing the number of experienced instructors at IWTC Virginia Beach.
“Being an instructor is one of the most rewarding experiences you will have in the Navy–not only are you training the future of the Navy, but you get the sense of accomplishment when you hear stories of how successful they are in the fleet,” said Negronrodriguez. “IS 2025 has been an extreme eye opener of what the greater aspect of the Navy is trying to accomplish and how it’s transforming. I look forward to seeing how all of this will look in the years going forward and how it will change the future of intelligence specialists coming into the Navy.”
IS2025 is a plan for rating modernization within the intelligence specialist rating. The plan creates a career continuum of training through the creation of an apprentice-journeyman-master level framework that guides an intelligence specialist toward sustained specialization of intelligence tradecraft throughout their career.
IWTC Virginia Beach, located in Dam Neck Annex, currently offers 65 courses of instruction in information technology, cryptology, and intelligence with an instructor and support staff of 280 military, civilian, and contractors who train over 6,500 students every year. It is one of four schoolhouses for Center for Information Warfare Training (CIWT) and oversees learning sites at Jacksonville and Mayport, Florida; Kings Bay, Georgia; and Groton, Connecticut to continue aligning IW community training.
With four schoolhouse commands, two detachments, and training sites throughout the United States and Japan, CIWT is recognized as Naval Education and Training Command’s top learning center for the past three years. Training over 21,000 students every year, CIWT delivers trained information warfare professionals to the Navy and joint services. CIWT also offers more than 200 courses for cryptologic technicians, intelligence specialists, information systems technicians, electronics technicians, and officers in the information warfare community.
