BUFFALO, N.Y. - Lt. Col. John Burke, a Glenville resident, has been selected to take command of the New York Army National Guard's 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion later this year.
Burke, who joined the New York Army National Guard in 1995 after serving with the Marine Corps Reserve, is an Active Guard and Reserve officer, who serves full-time in the National Guard. He served in Iraq with the 53rd Army Liaison Team, working with commanders of the Iraqi army in 2005.
Burke was selected for the job by the New York Army National Guard's command selection board of general officers. His most recent job was as inspector general for the Army National Guard at Joint Forces Headquarters in Latham.
The 27th Brigade Special Troops Battalion is comprised of specialist units - combat engineers, military police, signal Soldiers, military intelligence Soldiers and other specialists - which support the combat battalions of the 27th Brigade Combat Team.
