The flowers are an important food source for the Karner blue butterfly, an endangered species.
The butterfly has thrived at Fort McCoy because of the availability of flowering areas for lupines.
The areas are available thanks to work completed by post natural resources personnel while partnering with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as well as the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.
Located in the heart of the upper Midwest, Fort McCoy is the only U.S. Army installation in Wisconsin.
The installation has provided support and facilities for the field and classroom training of more than 100,000 military personnel from all services each year since 1984.
