SAN DIEGO - The amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) held a galley light off ceremony on the mess decks, May 1.

The ship recently underwent a renovation process for the galley which included new floors in the galley and the mess deck. The seat cushions for the dining area, table cloths, kettles, dishwashers and refrigerators were also replaced resulting in the ship being able to serve the crew aboard more efficiently.

“We have even more equipment incoming,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Donald H. Freel, the ship’s Food Service Officer. “We’re still working, we’re still growing and there’s even more we want to improve to make the dining experience a lot better.”

Steak and crab legs were on the menu for the grand reopening. Culinary specialists alongside food service attendants served exactly 1,079 crewmembers which included 688 pounds of T-bone steaks and over 260 pounds of Alaskan king crab legs.

The renovations to the galley allow Makin Island Sailors to chow down on breakfast, lunch and dinner comfortably, quickly, and without leaving the ship.

“Breakfast is definitely my favorite,” said Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Brandon Whitney. “I really enjoy the omelets. There’s a lot of variety and you can’t beat the convenience.”

Makin Island will continue to improve the galley and dining experience for the crew. They will continue to provide nutritious options to fuel Sailors throughout their work days.

“We look forward to taking care of the crew,” said Freel.
