SAN DIEGO – Diversity Committee Sailors assigned to the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) hosted a Women’s History Month celebration, March 29.

The celebration included guest speaker retired Air Force Capt. Soranun Boopanon who spoke about the importance of women in the military and how far they have come.

“I believe that the abilities to rise above and staying true to the vision despite adversities is key to why these women are champions.”

She continued by telling Makin Island Sailors about the amazing accomplishments of Eleanor Roosevelt, Mother Teresa, Dr. Victoria Jones, and retired Air Force Lt. Col. Angernette Coy-Coats.

“The contributions throughout history by women is absolutely amazing and I learn something new each and every time I’m involved in these events,” said commanding officer Capt. Christopher Westphal about holding a Women’s History Month Observance.

Boopanon challenged Makin Island Sailors, saying, “Never compare yourself with others, but rather use the qualities you admire as inspiration to achieve your vision, then use your progress today as a benchmark for a better you tomorrow!”

“Women have such an influence and every time we have an observance, we become more educated about how far we have come,” said Aviation Electronics Technician 3rd Class Elizabeth Ramirez.

Approximately 110 Sailors attended the celebration and cake cutting.
