USS Makin Island Observes Black History Month

SAN DIEGO — The crew of the amphibious assault ship USS Makin Island (LHD 8) observed Black History Month Feb. 20, including a reenactment of Doris Miller’s actions at the battle of Pearl Harbor.
The Makin Island Diversity Committee organized an event to recognize the accomplishments and achievements of African Americans in the military.
“It was important to show the crew how African Americans contributed to the military,” said Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Sheldon Limehouse, a diversity committee member. “What he did affected not only the history of African Americans but more importantly the history of America.”
Black History Month is a time to reflect and learn about the history of African Americans. Since it was first celebrated in 1970 during the month of February it has educated and inspired people of all races with the history of African Americans.
“It highlights the accomplishments of what a lot of my ancestors did,” said Lt. Christopher Munn, USS Makin Island’s electrical division officer and a member of the ship’s committee. “In the past there were a lot of restrictions on African Americans and the things they can do, so seeing the different stories and letting other people know how they overcame these situations is important because it spreads awareness.”
The event concluded with remarks from guest speaker Master Chief Personnel Specialist Jay McNuckle.
“Black History Month gives us the opportunity to learn the stories of those we may have not known much about until now,” said McNuckle. “It’s an opportunity to honor the 75,000 black Americans proudly serving our Navy today. To salute those black Americans who have stood up and served our country, despite unequal treatment in the past.”
