The Official Mail Center utilized a simple, inexpensive expansion of technology to change the game for packages and official mail on base.
The official mail center was processing and recording packages and accountable mail manually on paper logs. The manual log process was time consuming and prone to error. Their solution was to expand on the capabilities of existing technology to allow the exploitation of data already captured by bar codes created by the package origin source.
The automated package tracking innovation decreased processing time by 450 percent and saved 1,400 man-hours of manual logging per year.
For under $10,000, this system increased efficiency and eliminated losses while auto notifying costumers of deliveries. Through automation of accountable mail and packages, the Official Mail Center has complete control and visibility of internal movements and a complete chain of custody for every piece of accountable mail and packages.
The official mail center handles almost all mail to units on Edwards including Airmen in the dormitories.
