Armstrong assumes command of 17SB, will command NV Army Guard’s largest brigade

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Col. Troy E. Armstrong assumed command of the Nevada National Guard’s 17th Sustainment Brigade from Col. Eric G. Wishart in a ceremony at the Las Vegas Readiness Center, November 3, 2018.

Wishart served as commander of 17SB since 2016 and led the brigade during a time of transition after the unit returned from its 2016 deployment. Wishart increased the brigade’s readiness with a focus on training. In September, the brigade completed a command post exercise that improved its ability to oversee logistical operations.

“Command is so rewarding and so challenging at the same time, but in the end the balance sheet is always in the positive,” said Wishart to the 17SB attendants of the ceremony. “I’m a better person, a better officer and a better father because of you.”

Armstrong is the fifth commander in 17SB history. In his remarks, he thanked Wishart for his service, dedication and leadership.

“As long as I’ve been in this state, which is over 25 years, I’ve had the honor of knowing you and have had nothing but admiration and respect for your expertise, professionalism, leadership and warrior ethos,” said Armstrong to Wishart. “Thank you for putting the brigade on track for future success and for leading our men and women over the past several years during the brigade’s absence, reintegration and rebuilding.”

As the 17SB commander, Armstrong will lead more than 2,000 Soldiers, which is around 60 percent of the Nevada Army National Guard. Units within 17SB consist of engineers, transporters and military police personnel.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to carry forth your outstanding efforts,” said Armstrong to Wishart. “Not only to train and prepare our staff, but to train and prepare our incredible men and women throughout the formation.”

During the ceremony, Brig. Gen. Zachary F. Doser, Nevada’s Land Component Commander, presented Wishart with a Meritorious Service Medal for his service. Wishart’s staff also gave him a customized Golden Knights jersey and an engraved .45 caliber revolver.

“I could not think of a more qualified, motivated and deserving officer to take the 17th Sustainment Brigade from me,” said Wishart. “He’s a phenomenal professional and a dynamic leader. The brigade is in even better hands.”
