Soldiers of the U.S. Army’s 1st Battalion, 23rd Infantry Regiment, and the Indian army’s 99th Mountain Brigade, practiced repelling and ziplining techniques at Chaubattia Military Station, India, Sept. 20, 2018.
Prior to the repelling training, soldiers watched a skirmish demonstration that highlighted the Indian army’s mountain warfare techniques. This was part of Yudh Abhyas, an exercise that enhances the joint capabilities of both nations through training and cultural exchange, and helps foster enduring partnerships in the Indo-Asia Pacific region.
“It is amazing out here,” said Pfc. Michael Crawford, a Soldier with 1-23 Infantry. “We watched them do a demonstration on how they bound and move through steep terrain. It was very motivating for me. All my battle buddies around are motivated to do this.”
Crawford said the exercise has been a great experience so far. They have been going over the different weapons systems the Indian army has. Learning how to load and fire their weapons given him a better understanding of weapons overall.
Sharing knowledge is what the exercise is all about he added. They have been teaching them combatives techniques and they are teaching us theirs.
“I think we will definitely go home with more knowledge and a better understanding of our counterparts and their culture and they will have a better understanding of us,” said Crawford.
