Local students give back to guardsmen

By Airman 1st Class Jaelin Smith

HORSHAM AIR GUARD STATION, Pa. -- Approximately 30 students from Bishop McDevitt High School in Wyncote, Pa. volunteered their time and helped local Guardsman on September 7 at the Horsham Air Guard Station in Horsham, Pa.

The students from McDevitt assisted with preparing the base flight line for an upcoming Family Day event as part of their community service, while also learning about educational and professional opportunities the Air National Guard has to offer.

Their strong lineage of service and community involvement has supported the culture of the school and has lived thoroughly through their current students and past graduates, said John C. Church, the assistant principal for student services at McDevitt.

“We always talk about the McDevitt way,” said Church. “If you think about the McDevitt way as the students understand it, it means respect for yourself, respect for others and respect for your community. The students get that, and what they see here at Horsham AGS is that there is another community that is very similar.”

One core value of the Air Force is service before self, and the students of McDevitt are also taught the value of service, respect and community, said Church.

As potential future service members, the students from McDevitt have already demonstrated a desire and dedication to serve others.

The dedication of these students mirrors the devotion and commitment of the members of the Horsham Air National Guard.
