INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana National Guard held a retirement ceremony for Maj. Gen. David C. Wood Sunday, Aug. 5, 2017 at Camp Atterbury.
During the ceremony, Wood recounted the highlights of his career and expressed his gratitude for the service members he encountered in his years of service, including his last role as an assistant adjutant general.
“What makes military service special is the people you serve with,” said Wood. “I feel fortunate to have served with so many outstanding officers, noncommissioned officers, soldiers and airmen of the Indiana National Guard.
Wood served in multiple key leadership roles in the Indiana National Guard including the 38th Infantry Division commander from 2014 to 2018, the 38th Combat Aviation Brigade commander from 2007 to 2010 and the 638th Aviation Support Battalion from 2001 to 2003.
“The opportunity to lead soldiers throughout my career has been my greatest honor,” said Wood.
Wood recognized the efforts, understanding and support required from of his family, friends and civilian employer in order for him to have a successful military career.
"Dave has done so much for the men and women of this organization, Indiana and the nation,” said Maj. Gen. Courtney P. Carr, adjutant general of Indiana. “We are excited for this next phase of his life and thankful for the opportunity to have served with this great leader."
Wood, a two-time combat veteran, earned numerous decorations and awards to include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Senior Aviator Badge, Parachutist Badge and Air Assault Badge. Wood received the Legion of Hoosier Heroes and Indiana Distinguished Service Medal during the ceremony.
Wood began his military service when he commissioned as a second lieutenant upon graduation from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1985. He served more than six years in U.S. Army before transferring to the Indiana Army National Guard where he served the remainder of his military career.
Wood worked as a civilian pilot for Delta Airlines during his time in the Indiana National Guard and will continue to fly for the company after his retirement from the military.
