ATSUGI, Japan – Hundreds of spectators gathered for the chance to see a P-8A Poseidon from the Patrol Squadron (VP) 45 “Pelicans” at the Friendship Day event on Naval Air Facility Atsugi, April 21.
The P-8A was one of several U.S. Navy and Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force aircraft on display at the event, held annually to educate the public on various air platforms fielded by the two nations.
Visitors flocked to see the Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance (MPR) aircraft up close and for a chance to meet and take photos with the crew. “I was blown away by all the excited faces,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Johnathan Moreno, a member of the Pelican aircrew. “Mothers wanted us to hold their babies for photos and many kids said they wanted to be like us when they grew up.”
Interest in the P-8A was also fueled by the presence of the Kawasaki P-1—Japan’s own newest maritime patrol platform. “It is exciting to see both aircraft and we look forward to their future cooperation,” said a local Japanese aviation enthusiast visiting with the crew.
Throughout the day, members of the Pelican crew also had the chance to meet personnel representing the other aircraft. “Friendship Day allowed us a valuable opportunity to strengthen ties with other aviation squadrons—both U.S. and Japanese—operating throughout the region,” said Lt. Cmdr. Luke Reid, VP-45 officer in charge for the event.
The VP-45 Pelicans are based out of Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Florida and are currently on a six-month deployment in support of U.S 7th Fleet.
