VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The United Service Organization of Hampton Roads hosted the annual holiday party, Dec. 6, at Rockwell Hall Gym on Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek.

The gym was packed with service members and their families to enjoy several events the USO had to offer.

"This is my second time coming to this event and I'd have to say that it has been a success both times," said Adm. Jonathan Greenert, commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command. "This is an event that my wife and I enjoy visiting simply because we don't have young children anymore so to share the holidays with others is a blessing."

During the party, service members and their families visited various booths for face painting, temporary tattoos, toys and candy. Children formed a line, excited to see clowns blowing up balloons and, most of all Santa Claus.

"I think that it is great that there are people out there who care about service members and their families," said Karen Williams, a Navy spouse. "My husband is on a deployment right now and this was a great opportunity for our two year-old daughter to see Santa Claus and enjoy the entertainment that was provided here today."

Several Sailors from the Precommissioning Unit USS George W. H. Bush volunteered to help make this event a success.

"I chose to volunteer because this is what I loved before I joined the Navy," said Airman Rubi Marte, aviation ordnanceman. "Providing my services today reminds me of home."

Sailors from the PCU Bush painted faces, served food, and helped set up for the event.

"Helping out feels pretty good, because I'm away from my family, just to see the kid's faces while doing something fun makes this event worthwhile," said Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Fuel) Airman Benjamin Slater.

A local business provided the food and other refreshments for the party, and donated $10,000 to the next USO Holiday Party.
