BAGHDAD – Tips from concerned citizens led Iraqi army soldiers, Iraqi National Police and Multi-National Division – Baghdad Soldiers to weapons caches throughout Baghdad, Nov. 25 and 26.
Iraqi soldiers serving with 55th Brigade, 17th Iraqi Army Division, acting on a tip found a cache in a Sayafiyah residence at approximately 5 p.m., Nov. 25. The large cache consisted of 705 projectiles, 25 mortars, 12 high-explosive, anti-tank rockets, 12 rocket-propelled grenades, an RPG launcher, a hand grenade, eight propellant charges, 51 fuses and improvised-explosive device-making material. The weapons and munitions were turned over to MND-B's 2nd Brigade, 1st Armor Division.
Another tip led Iraqi soldiers serving with the 6th Iraqi Army Division to four improvised-rocket launchers, a machine gun and a mortar tube in Tarmiyah at approximately 1 p.m., Nov. 26.
Two hours later, Iraqi national police with 3rd Brigade, 1st National Police Division, confiscated a cache south of Baghdad. A tip led policemen to two projectiles, three RPGs, a hand grenade and four sticks of explosives. Soldiers serving with 2nd Bde., 1st Arm. Div., conducted a controlled detonation to destroy the munitions.
IA soldiers serving with 4th Battalion, 36th Brigade, 9th IA Division, followed up on a tip leading to the seizure of a cache north of Baghdad at approximately 6 p.m. The cache included an anti-tank missile, three projectiles, three mortars, a Motorola radio, four feet of detonation cord, an electric blasting cap and two pounds of unidentified bulk explosive. The IA soldiers turned the cache over to MND-B Soldiers with the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
"The Iraqi army continues to make a tremendous contribution in safeguarding the Iraqi populace," said Lt. Col. Steve Stover, spokesman, MND-B and the 4th Infantry Division. "Removing this huge of an amount of dangerous missions further demonstrates their professionalism and dedication."
