NORFOLK, Va. – Sailors at Naval Station Norfolk participated in the Holiday Assistance Program, Nov. 24, collecting food and donations to distribute to families in need.

"This year the program was able to provide 96 baskets of food and 101 vouchers for families who need that extra assistance this holiday season," said Petty Officer 1st Class Chelboni Singleton, a HAP coordinator. "We provided a few extra vouchers just in case there was a family who did not apply, because we never want to turn anyone away."

The Chief Petty Officer Association and the 1st Class Petty Officer Association on NAVSTA Norfolk offered their assistance by donating money to HAP.

"I am thankful for all the people who donated to HAP," said Petty Officer 2nd Class Elizabeth Haywood. "These are the people who made this event possible."

There were several new Sailors who volunteered to help with the program and expressed their passion for helping out their shipmates throughout the holidays.

"I have only been at this command for a week and I enjoy helping others," said Seaman Roberto Schneider, at NAVSTA Norfolk Chapel. "I'm certain that this gives the families in need a sense that people are out there to help them and they are not alone."

This event is held every year at several different areas throughout the Navy and other branches of the service.

"I have been participating in this event for seven years now and I enjoy every moment of helping others," said Singleton. "I have participated in events like this not just for the Navy, but the Marine Corps as well."

HAP volunteers distributed the food and vouchers November in time for the Thanksgiving holidays.
