CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. -- The Indiana National Guard's disaster response team changed commanders on Jan. 6.
Maj. Robert Brake, Indianapolis native, assumed command from Lt.Col. Gregory Motz of the 19th CERFP Battalion.
The 19th CERFP-Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense Enhanced Response Force Package- is a joint response force capable to deploy via air or ground assets within six hours of notification.
“Having been a first responder throughout my career, this is an incredible opportunity for me to serve as the commander of the CERFP Battalion,” Brake said, “I’m looking forward to the
challenges that it will bring, international travel and the opportunity to serve both the wartime trace mission and citizens of Indiana.”
Brake holds a Bachelor of Science from Ball State University, and additionally maintains credentials as a police officer, firefighter and was formally registered as an EMT for several years.
Brake has been awarded many federal awards including; two Bronze Star Medals, two Army Commendation Medals and multiple Meritorious Service Medals.
Motz will move on to assume command of the 2nd Battalion, 150th Field Artillery Regiment in Bloomington.
“Saying goodbye is the hardest part, but it’s healthy for the unit because a new direction is always a refreshing change,” said Motz. “I look forward to seeing the unit continue to succeed and become even more ready to respond.”
Moving forward this year the battalion is sending a platoon sized element to participate in the multinational exercise Toxic Valley 1, supporting our state partnership with Slovakia
