Nov. 11, 2017 marks the 99th anniversary of the Armistice which ended WW1 (1914-18), when the guns on the Western Front fell silent at 11am after more than four years of bloody war. Nov. 11 remains significant for the many nations who pause to remember servicemen and women past and present.

Lt. Gen. Paul E. Funk II, commanding general of CJTF-OIR paid tribute to those who have served their nations in conflict, including the men and women of CJTF-OIR who are today serving in the fight against the brutal reign of terror inflicted by Daesh in Iraq, Syria and elsewhere.

“Today we reflect on the sacrifices of those who came before us in the profession of arms and the profound impact they have had on our world,” said Funk. “We honor them with a deep sense of pride for their sacrifices and a sense of gratitude for what they fought to preserve – the liberties that our nations enjoy.”

“All here today have set aside personal pursuits and answered the call to serve your nations for the cause of freedom. We know from the lessons of history that we must always be prepared for war, even though we pray for peace,” Funk said.

CJTF-OIR is a global coalition of 69 nations and four organizations that works with partner forces to defeat Daesh in designated areas of Iraq and Syria and establish a foundation for follow-on operations to increase regional stability
