INDIANAPOLIS – Governor Mitch Daniels and Indiana's Adjutant General, Maj. Gen. R. Martin Umbarger, regretfully report the death of two Indiana National Guard Soldiers who were killed while on deployment in Iraq.

Sgt. Gary Henry, 34, of Indianapolis, and Spc. Jonathan Menke, 22, of Madison, Ind., died Aug. 4, 2008, in Baghdad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when debris from an improvised explosive device detonation on an overpass fell onto their vehicle. They were assigned to the 38th Military Police Company, 38th Infantry Division, Indiana Army National Guard, Danville, Ind.

"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the Sgt. Henry and Spc. Menke who lost their lives in the service of their nation. No words can adequately express the sorrow and loss that I and their fellow Guardsmen feel in their untimely death. I can say to you, however, their sacrifice in defense of freedom will never be forgotten."

The company's mission while in Iraq is to train Iraqi police officers.
