2016 Semper Fi Bowl Coaches, Parents Welcome Address

CARSON, Calif. - Every year, young athletes from across the nation are hand-selected to be a part of the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. These players are selected for their excellence on and off the field. Behind many of these great players are loving, caring support systems. For most, it is their parents and coaches.

Becoming a Marine is challenging, and becoming a Semper Fidelis All-American is no different. Selections demand quality of character, excellence in education and proven physical fitness.

“It was an honor when our son got selected," said Shannon Byrd, mother of Logan Byrd, a quarterback in the 2016 Semper Fi Bowl from Warner Robins, Georgia. “Logan was super excited, and being connected with the armed services is a privilege.”

The athletes practice for the bowl game every morning with coaches, Marine Corps mentors and drill instructors. The goal of the Marines and coaches is to instill leadership traits and qualities into the players which they can take with them both to the field and back to their communities.

“I think it’s a great opportunity for the athletes to get to come out here and work with the Marines," said Corey Crosby, a defensive coach with SFAAB from Bamberg, South Carolina. “It gives them a chance to practice leadership as well as commitment.”

Throughout the week, the players interacted with the Marines and coaches through football as well as other activities. They were given the opportunity to mentor children from the local community. They participated in outdoor activities with the kids, and taught them a little bit about how the Marine Corps relates to football.

“This is a well-organized event, and being out here is a fun experience for the boys to come together with each other and the Marines,” said Byrd.

This year is the 5th annual SFAAB. Each year, some of the nation’s finest football coaches are selected to come help train and mentor these young athletes.

“I’m glad to have the opportunity to be part of this game,” said Crosby. “It’s great being around the Marines. I learn something new from them every day.”

The SFAAB will kick off Jan. 3, in Carson, California, at 6 p.m. (PST) on Fox Sports 1.
