Soldiers get UPAR training

CAMP SANTIAGO JOINT MANEUVER TRAINING CENTER, SALINAS, Puerto Rico - Citizen Soldiers of 101st Troop Command, Puerto Rico National Guard, participate in Unit Public Affairs Representatives training, also known as UPAR training, May, 25 during annual training 2015.

The UPAR trainees received on hand training on Public Affairs policies and procedures by Non Commissioned Officers of the 113th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, Puerto Rico National Guard.

“The training on public affairs was offered with the intention to gain additional support and resources dedicated to the public affairs mission within the units”, said Sgt. Julio Saunders, Public Affairs NCO, of the 113th Mobile Public Affairs Detachment, in charge of the training.

According to Saunders, recording the history of the U. S. Armed Forces as well as keeping military personnel and the public informed of the military’s activities is part of the functions of a public affairs specialists.

During the four-hour training, the participants were briefed on public affairs functions and on photojournalism, social media and broadcasting techniques.

“I have learned a lot about public affairs today. I’m excited about telling the story of the Soldiers of our unit”, said Spc. Elvin Diaz, member of the PRNG 1014th Engineer Company of the 130th Engineer Battalion.

“Sharing the Army’s story with our communities and our Soldiers families has become most significant for the morale and welfare of our Troops. To have these Soldiers interested in participating in this aspect of our mission is simply outstanding”, said Saunders.

According to Saunders, the training was conducted as planned and further training will be offered to the UPARs during annual training as needed.
