LOS ANGELES - On April 1, 2015, the Coast Guard stood up its 22nd rating, officially recognizing diving as a primary career path for Coast Guard men and women. Last week, Coast Guard Dive Locker West completed decompression dive training aboard Coast Guard Cutter George Cobb. While this wasn’t the service’s first decompression dive training, it was one of the first decompression dives made by rated Coast Guard divers.
Decompression diving is when divers must stop their ascent to the water’s surface at periodic levels in order to achieve equilibrium. This avoids decompression sickness or other potentially fatal results from longer periods of diving in deep waters.
The decompression training is crucial for developing expertise as a Coast Guard diver, and many of the missions completed by Coast Guard divers in the future will depend on this ability.
