CAMP HANSEN, Japan – More than 150 Marines with 7th Communications Battalion, III Marine Expeditionary Force, hosted the 7th Annual Mini-Special Olympics on Camp Hansen, Dec. 14, for 70 residents of Reimeino Sato Facility for Mentally Handicapped from Ishikawa.
Each year the Olympians look forward to getting out and spending a fun-filled day with the Marines, said Chiyoko Kochi, the community relations specialist for Camp Hansen.
"Some of (the Olympians) never smile, but today they are all so excited," Kochi said. "They've been waiting for this day. They had it marked on their calendars; they all jumped out of their beds this morning to come here."
Each of the eight teams participated in a kickball relay, a balloon stomp, a baton relay and a tug-of-war competition. Two Marines helped each Olympian during the events.
Many of the Olympians enjoyed participating in the balloon stomp and the baton relay with the Marines, said Pfc. Kyle Stokes, a radio operator with 7th Communications Bn.
"The relay was the best part of today," said Takeo Tôyama, a Special Olympian. "The Marines are doing a very good job, I had a good time."
The Marines also enjoyed working with the Olympians. For some it was an experience that they were familiar with.
"I worked with special-needs kids in high school and I think it's great to help them out so they know they're not alone," Stokes said. "It feels good to help out special needs people."
All the participants left the event with new friends and a good workout, said 1st Sgt. Scott Bowden, the first sergeant for A Company, 7 Communications Bn.
"I think it was a great success. All the Marines and participants had a good time and everyone was all smiles," He concluded.
