KABUL, Afghanistan – ISAF strongly condemns today’s cowardly suicide attack in the Urgun district of Paktika province. The attack which took place during the holy month of Ramadan in a crowded marketplace resulted in significant civilian casualties to include women and children. Some of the more critically injured have been brought to ISAF clinics in eastern Afghanistan for treatment.

While the Taliban have denied their involvement, anti-government elements continue to demonstrate their complete disregard for human life as highlighted in the 2014 United Nation Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) Protection of Civilians in Armed Conflict mid-year report.

"I express my sympathies to the victims and families of those injured and killed in this senseless attack," said Lt. Gen. Carsten Jacobson, deputy ISAF commander. "The premeditated and indiscriminate killings of civilians must stop."

ISAF, in cooperation with Afghan security forces, remains committed to protecting the Afghan people and holding accountable those responsible for these type attacks. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of those killed and injured.
