MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. – The Defense Commissary Agency and the Fisher House Foundation presented scholarships to military children during a ceremony aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., June 19.
Sgt. Maj. Richard Charron, MCAS Miramar sergeant major, presented the awards to six high school seniors. Each student received a $2,000 scholarship after meeting the requirements: a 3.0 or higher high school grade point average, community involvement and the submission of an essay.
“The commissary system has long supported promotions with a focus on education,” said Robert Nagle, Miramar Commissary store director. “Community involvement is what the Miramar Commissary is all about, and scholarships for military children are one way to show we care.”
The scholarships were part of Scholarships for Military Children, a program funded by the vendors and manufacturers who sell their products at base commissaries.
“Earning these scholarships becomes a vital part of each recipient’s life as they go on to college with one less financial worry,” said Charron. “Education is key to the future and these winners are facilitating that.”
Scholarship winners and family members expressed their gratitude at the end of the ceremony to the commissary, the air station and the sponsors. Sponsors such as Lisa Martinez assisted with the funding of these scholarships.
“When the commissary comes to mind, I think of three words: loyalty, commitment and mainly, support,” said Sierra Guthrie, one of the scholarship winners. “The commissary, through the help of sponsors like Lisa, continues to show its support for military families.”
