CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -The peaceful village in the tall pine trees of Eastern North Carolina came alive during a two-day operation with 50 North Carolina National Guard Recruit Sustainment Program recruits. These recruits were training at Camp Lejeune's Military Operations in Urban Terrain (MOUT) facility.

Under the keen and watchful eye of Master Sgt. John Hogan, noncommissioned officer in charge with 19 years of experience in the Marines and NCNG, gave the recruits their mission. The recruits quickly went to work planning their operation and conducted rehearsals prior to movement into the village.

They quickly learned that a good plan can rapidly change once simulated team injuries occur to team members and cause changes in their leadership.

Hogan and his team of cadre challenged the recruits to think and act decisively as enemy forces tried to disrupt their movements and push them out of the village. After several missions, the recruits gained confidence and performed well. They had succeeded in their mission and learned how to work together as one team.

“The training was important because it helped develop teamwork, decision-making under stressful conditions, and provided recruits the opportunity to use this great MOUT facility,” said Hogan. “You can see their level of their excitement.”

N.C. National Guard’s Recruit Sustainment Program introduces new Guard recruits to the fundamentals of the National Guard and the U.S. Army before they depart for Basic Combat Training (BCT) and Advanced Individual Training (AIT). The program allows recruits to complete BCT and AIT with greater ease, and upon graduation, return to their units as ready, reliable and relevant Citizen-Solders.
