SAN ANTONIO - Isaiah Thompson was awarded the Marine Corps “Excellence in Leadership Award” March 28, 2014, at the 40th annual National Society of Black Engineers Convention.
The National Society of Black Engineers is a nonprofit association dedicated to the academic and professional success of black engineering and technical students and professionals. It offers members leadership training, professional and academic development, mentoring opportunities, and scholarships. NSBE is one of the largest student-run societies, comprised of more than 400 chapters, nationwide and overseas.
During a luncheon for graduating seniors, Thompson was recognized by the Marine Corps for his academic success and the impact he has made in his community.
Thompson was named 2013 National Merit Commended Student, a National Achievement Finalist, and an AP Scholar with Distinction for excelling academically his senior year at Keystone School in San Antonio. He is also a leader in NSBE on the local and regional levels. He served as his chapter’s financial secretary, secretary, vice president and 2013-2014 president of the San Antonio NSBE Jr. Chapter.
Thompson has dedicated over 300 hours of service and has made a positive impact on his community. He was later recognized by President Obama with the Presidential Volunteer Service Gold and Bronze awards.
The Marine Corps is in its fourth year of partnering with NSBE. The Corps hopes to use the partnership to reach women and men like Thompson in an effort to foster relationships and educate about military opportunities. The Marine Corps is dedicated to continuing the legacy of honor, courage and commitment through the recruitment of qualified and skilled leaders.
Thompson has considered a possible career in the Marine Corps but plans to pursue his dream of starting his own company.
“I plan to get a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a minor in Business so I can hopefully start my own company,” said Thompson.
