MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C. - Whether Cpl. Jonathan D. Patterson is troubleshooting during a flight or leading junior Marines on the ground, the avionics technician with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 366 is always prepared for the next possible challenge.
Patterson, a Danville, Va. native, is responsible for troubleshooting, repairing and replacing faulty equipment on the CH-53E Super Stallion.
“My main job is troubleshooting. Any electronics the aircraft uses, I fix,” said Patterson. “It is my responsibility to ensure the pilots can navigate and fly safely. If we don’t work, the birds don’t work.”
Having a willingness to work hard and remaining observant are keys to success as an avionics technician, according to Patterson.
Patterson displayed his keen observance skills as well as attention to detail when he noticed a rapidly increasing oil leak while in flight and confirmed the leak before giving the order to ground the flight. His quick decision making saved the number one engine from failing in flight and potentially saved the lives of everyone on board.
The 21-year-old former volunteer firefighter said he enjoys learning and passing on his knowledge. He is a mentor for two junior Marines and sets the example for all Marines in his work section.
“I oversee all the lance corporals in my shop and share knowledge and teach them as much as I can,” said Patterson.
Patterson said he looks forward to advancing his skills as an avionics technician and plans to advance his career as a Marine.
