MARINE CORPS AIR STATION MIRAMAR, Calif. - Bonnie Amos, First Lady of the Marine Corps, and Col. John Farnam, commanding officer of Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, unveiled the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold plaque at the Miramar Inn aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Calif., Feb. 13.
The LEED certification recognizes the best building strategies and redefines the ways energy conservation and environmental cleanliness are used in homes and workplaces. LEED provides building owners with a way to become environmentally friendly.
The Miramar Inn was able to drop energy cost up to 30 percent after the LEED initiative was set into action. Energy management and control systems are incorporated throughout the facility helping reduce costs.
The staff of the Miramar Inn promotes recycling and operates with suppliers that are eco-friendly and uses solar panels to help cut the costs and rainwater is designed to remain on site to contribute to low impact design.
Amos toured the inn and viewed the environmentally friendly changes that were made to cut costs.
“It’s an honor to have Mrs. Amos come and help us celebrate our special day and unveil the LEED Gold certification,” said Rick Snee, recreation business director for Marine Corps Community Services.
Amos and Farnam unveiled the LEED Gold plaque in the lobby of the inn where employees were present to see what their hard work was achieving.
“It’s always a pleasure to have the commandant’s wife here, but to have Mrs. Amos come in and unveil the plaque and recognize the facility is perfect,” said Farnam.
The inn is the first of the Marine Corps Lodging Program to receive the LEED Gold certificate.
