LEXINGTON, S.C.— With family, friends and fellow service members in attendance, 59th Troop Command, South Carolina Army National Guard, held a change of command ceremony with the outgoing commander, Brig. Gen. R. Van McCarty, passing the unit colors to incoming commander, Col. Charles W. Moore, Feb. 2, 2014.
The passing of the colors renders honors to the senior commander, and respect and loyalty to the new commander, while the review of troops signifies farewell by the outgoing commander and an introduction to the new commander.
McCarty assumed command of the brigade over two years ago and under his command units in 59th Troop Command have served in areas including Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, South America and within the United States. He now moves on to greater responsibility as he prepares to become the S.C. National Guard deputy adjutant general.
“We thank Van and his wife Susan for being a great team and for serving this great state of South Carolina,” said Maj. Gen. Robert E. Livingston, Jr., adjutant general of South Carolina. “You kept Troop Command in a high state of readiness and morale.”
Moore, a native of Seneca, has held a variety of leadership positions throughout his military career. Most recently, he was commander of the 218th Regiment (Leadership) and during this time, the institute was awarded the ‘Institution of Excellence’ during the last accreditation cycle.
“You’re inheriting a great command. They are the best this country has to offer,” Livingston said to Moore. “It is a privilege to command such soldiers and to care for such families.”
As McCarty made his exit, he expressed his thanks and admiration to the soldiers in formation. “As I leave today, I would like to say thank you for the opportunity to serve with you. I ask that as you move forward, you provide the same service and level of commitment to Colonel Moore and his family that you have to mine.”
McCarty extended an emotional and thoughtful thank you to his wife Susan and family for their dedication and support during his time as commander. “This is not something I could have done without the support of my family and my wonderful and loving wife, Susan,” added McCarty.
Moore was introduced as the new commander and addressed the formation of troops. “I stand here today, assuming command of what I believe to be the finest brigade of soldiers in the United States Army,” said Moore. “I am truly thankful for the honor and opportunity to lead these soldiers.”
59th Troop Command provides command and control for more than 3,000 soldiers in 44 individual units which include engineers, military police, explosive hazards, transportation and support personnel.
