YOKOSUKA, Japan- USS George Washington’s (CVN 73) Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions (CSADD) hosted a bowling tournament for Sailors at the Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka bowling alley, Jan. 25.
CSADD provided free pizza and soda for sailors who competed against each other for third, second and first place prizes.
“This event was designed to help raise morale around the ship and also to give sailors an alternative way to spend their time,” said Aviation Ordnaceman 2nd Class Franklin Tavarus, George Washington’s CSADD chapter president, from Conyers, Ga.
The program reinforces the shipmates helping shipmates culture and is geared toward sailors 18 to 25 years old.
“We have everyone from a seaman to a master chief, and it gives them a chance to socialize in a nice setting,” said Interior Communications Electritian Fireman Matthew Pepper, the CSADD chapter’s treasurer, from Limon, Colo.
The focus of a CSADD chapter is discussing issues that cause sailors to make the wrong decisions and discovering new ways to prevent sailors from making those decisions.
“I think Sailors could benefit hugely from signing up for CSADD with all of the social events, volunteer opportunities, and monthly training topics going on that are focused on junior sailors and helping them make non-destructive decisions,” said Travarus.
CSADD members plan alcohol-free liberty activities like movie nights, day-trips and sporting events for their shipmates to enjoy.
“The great events just like this that CSADD does, gives sailors something else to do other than sit inside or watch TV,” said George Washington’s Command Master Chief Shaun Brahmsteadt. “Events like this have grown and expanded camaraderie between the junior sailors.”
CSADD reminds sailors that America’s Navy is a global force for good that is successful due to the positive leadership of sailors in all pay grades while on and off duty.
