US Army Central Soldier Spotlight: Spc. Darren Miller

CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait – This week’s U.S. Army Central Soldier Spotlight is Spc. Darren Miller, a paralegal specialist assigned to the 1st Legal Operations Detachment, located in Austin, Texas. Miller is a native of Flint, Mich., and has served in the U.S. Army Reserve for two years.

“I joined the Army because I needed to find work, and I wanted to be a Soldier. I also wanted a way to pay for college and travel,” said Miller.

Q: What is your favorite movie genre?

A: Science Fiction. It seems to me the best movies are Sci-Fi. They make me think about things I wouldn’t usually think about, and I look for ways to tie them to my interest in engineering. I also think there is a lot of variety in the genre. You have horror, romance and fantasy in science fiction.

Q: What is your favorite food?

A: Lasagna. They serve three different types of lasagna here, and I eat them all.

Q: What are your goals?

A: My educational goal is to earn a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

Q: What are you most proud of?

A: My ability to solve problems.

Q: What are your hobbies?

A: Back home, I’m not going to lie, I play a lot of videogames. Out here, I try to participate in the different events like dancing. If there are enough people participating, I’ll dance; I don’t care if it’s country, Latin or rhythm and blues music. I also like to weight lift.

Q: If you could spend one hour with anyone, who would it be and why?

A: I would spend it with my grandmother. She taught me a lot of things growing up; she practically raised me. In fact, when I get rest and recuperation leave, I’m going on a trip with her. I’d like to take her to Thailand.
