MILLINGTON, Tenn. – Memphis native U.S. Navy Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) 1st Class Gemmy Tyson received Navy Recruiting Command’s (NRC) Sailor of the year award, Naval Support Activity Mid-South’s (NSAMS) Chief Petty Officer Association Sailor of the Year award and the Sailor of the Year award for all of Navy recruiting for fiscal year 2013 in Millington, Tenn.
Tyson is the son of Gemmy Tyson Sr. and Marcia Tyson also of Memphis, Tenn. He is a 1999 graduate of Sheffield High School, Memphis, Tenn.
Tyson entered the Navy in 1999 and completed AT “A” School immediately following boot camp. As an AT, Tyson supports the Navy mission with some of the most advanced electronics equipment in the world repairing a wide range of aircraft electrical and electronic systems.
“I think that my success is purely derived from my fellow Sailors around me,” said Tyson. “Working with a top-notch group of professionals makes it much easier to succeed on the job; by being named NRC's and NSAMS's Sailor of the Year, I think that it shows that I was surrounded by the absolute best group of sailors that the Navy has.”
During his 14 years in the uniform, Tyson has served at AT “A” School, AT “C” School, Carrier Airborne Early Warning Squadron (VAW) 125, Navy Recruiting District Nashville, VAW 123 and NRC.
Tyson is also a command fitness leader at NRC where he establishes Navy standards for maintaining optimal health, physical, and mental stamina. He also focuses on the wellness of Sailors and their families by providing the skills and tools for fitness and nutrition.
Tyson’s military awards and decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, six Navy Achievement Medals and qualifications as an aviation warfare specialist.
“The best advice that I can give to other sailors is to stay motivated, keep a good ‘game face’ on and keep pushing forward,” said Tyson. “Find something good out of the worst situation, maintain a sense of humor and always be ready and able to adapt to any situation.”
“Lead by example,” he added. “Keep working hard and success will follow.”
