USS Germantown arrives in Okinawa

OKINAWA, Japan - In response to Super Typhoon Haiyan, the amphibious dock landing ship USS Germantown (LSD 42) arrived in Okinawa, Japan, Nov. 15, to pick up disaster relief supplies to be delivered to the Republic of the Philippines.

Along with relief supplies, the Germantown will be taking on elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit to further aid with disaster relief efforts.

“This is what the forward deployed Navy is all about,” said Cmdr. Jason Leach, commanding officer of USS Germantown. “We have to be ready to go on a moment’s notice to aid our nation and our allies, and I couldn’t be more proud of the way my crew has responded to this challenge.”

After leaving Okinawa, the ship will join the George Washington Strike Group in the vicinity of the Leyte Gulf.
