Tough Mudder 2013

TEMECULA, Calif. – Staff Sgt. Debany Devone and Spc. Antonio Martinez of the 416th Civil Affairs Airborne Battalion conquered a 12-mile endurance challenge called "Tough Mudder," plunging through mud, ice and 10,000 volts of electricity Nov. 9.

The Tough Mudder Challenge, designed by British special forces and held worldwide, is a hardcore obstacle course designed to test your all-around strength, stamina, mental grit and camaraderie.

“The camaraderie between the civilian participants and military was very motivational. At starting line we all became one team," said Martinez. "You need to have heart and drive not to give up to participate in Tough Mudder. We all overcame the obstacles together through teamwork and unity.”

Devone shared the same opinion as his teammate Martinez as they ran the course together.

“I gladly volunteered to represent the Army Reserves and my unit, verses doing it on my own as a civilian," said Devone. "I know that representing as a Reservist motivates the troops in my unit, so I jumped at the opportunity,”

This year the Army teamed up with Tough Mudder in support of eight events. Soldiers were on site posted at key obstacles to motivate participates and encourage perseverance.

“As an Army Reservist I love seeing that the Army is supporting events like Tough Mudder. We are giving the public more exposure to the skills and fitness level of a citizen soldier,” said Devone.

Tough Mudder is a proud supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project. To date, Tough Mudder participants have raised more than $5 million to support thousands of warriors returning from the battlefield. Tough Mudder helps participants raise money for Wounded Warrior Project though online donations.

“I think this is a great way to make the public aware of the Wounded Warrior Program and get them involved,” said Devone.

Tough Mudder participants and Army Reserve soldiers possess a unique and similar set of strengths including leadership, dedication and personal courage.

“We all became like brothers and sisters during the challenge, picking each other up and making sure no one was left behind, and that’s what Tough Mudder is all about,” added Devone.

The 416th Civil Affairs Airborne Battalion is a U.S. Army Reserve unit located in San Diego.
