Garrison soldiers deliver warmth

YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea – Soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan, visited Hongeun-dong to deliver coal bricks to members of the community, Nov. 6.

The coal brick delivery is an annual event to help those in need stay warm during the cold Korean months ahead, and strengthen the garrison’s relationship with the community.

The delivery event was operated by soldiers of the garrison, members of Saemaul community and the Korean Red Cross. For many of the Korean civilian volunteers, it was their first time working with U.S. soldiers. They said the overall experience was unique and meaningful for them. Woo, Jeong Sook, a member of the Korean Red Cross, shared her thoughts.

“It sure was a different experience since we usually work with community members, students or some civilian volunteers,” Woo said. “It’s nice to know that the Army is noticing the ones who need assistance. Most of the coal that we deliver today goes to the elderly, or the ones who are in critical condition. It is important for people to know that there still are people who live in a lesser condition than ours, and it is our duty to help them stand on their feet.”

Forty soldiers of Headquarters and Headquarters Company participated in this good neighbor event, working side-by-side with 20 community members to deliver more than 4000 coal bricks in one day.
