WASHINGTON – A Missouri National Guardsman was honored with the chance to run on the All Army Ten-Miler Team, which is made up of the seven best runners in the Army, in Washington, D.C., Oct. 20.
Cadet Brett Carter, of Battery D, 1-129th Field Artillery Regiment, of Independence, Mo., was the team’s only National Guardsman, and the first Missouri National Guard soldier selected to run for the team.
“It was a great day and an amazing course,” Carter said. “I am honored to be able to represent the U.S. Army and the Missouri National Guard in such a great way.”
The mission of the Army Ten-Miler is to promote the Army, build esprit de corps, support fitness goals and enhance community relations. The 10-mile road race is one of the most well-attended races of its kind in the world, and is the Army’s premier running event. The race course begins and ends at the Pentagon and runs through the nation’s capital.
Military and civilian runners come from all over the world to take part in the annual tradition. This year, 35,000 registered runners - 63 percent of the runners - were active duty, Reserve, Guard, retired military, Veterans, military family members or Defense Department employees. There were 19 locations overseas hosting officially-sponsored shadow runs, which consisted of more than 8,500 runners. The locations included Afghanistan, Cuba, Kuwait, Kosovo, Pakistan and South Korea.
Many Missouri National Guardsmen also competed as individual runners.
Carter was 22nd out of 35,000 participants overall and ninth in the military division with a time of 51:09. The All Army Team finished in a close second to the Brazilian team.
