PANJSHIR, Afghanistan – The modern convenience of electricity will reach even more Afghan families with the groundbreaking of the eighth micro-hydro electric generator sponsored by the Panjshir Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT).
Governor Bahlol was joined by Air Force Col. Fred L. Fairhurst, commander, 755th Air Expeditionary Group, in laying the foundation for the Korovah micro-hydro electric generator in Shutol District, Panjshir province, July 31, which will service more than 300 families and a school.
"This is another example of the PRT working with us to develop of our province," said Bahlol. "They are valuable partners to us as we continue our growth in governance and development."
The Koravah micro-hydro electric generator will produce 56 kilowatts of power and cost more than $97,000. Micro-hydros create electricity by using falling water to spin a turbine, which then turns a generator and creates electricity.
"We're excited to partner with the Panjshiris as their capacity for development planning and governance grows," said Lt. Col. Chris Luedtke, PRT commander. "Eight micro-hydros, seven schools, and three district centers are just the structural part of the partnership between the Panjshiris and the PRT. We're here to assist the reach and capacity of their government from Kabul, through the governor, the provincial council and other provincial leaders."
