2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry hosts families for Trunk or Treat

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - A special family event called Trunk or Treat, was held Wednesday, Oct. 23 by the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division family readiness group at their headquarters on Fort Drum giving their families the opportunity to enjoy the spirit of Halloween.

The Trunk or Treat event gave the families whose soldiers are deploying to Afghanistan a chance to build new friendships while celebrating Halloween together. The event also enabled family readiness group leaders to develop relationships with the families while providing them with information concerning upcoming events.

“It was great to see all of the families come out and celebrate together,” said Beth Jones, the family readiness group leader for the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion 87th Infantry. “We have a great family readiness group!”

During the Trunk or Treat event, the families, some of whom were dressed for the occasion, staged their cars, which they had the children pretend were haunted, at their company’s parking lot. The children dressed in their Halloween costumes and collected candy from the trunks of the cars as they walked by.

“It was a great event for the families to celebrate together prior to us leaving for deployment,” said 2nd Lt. John Swanson. “My two girls loved the event.”

Trunk or Treat was just one of the many memorable family events the 2nd Battalion, 87th Infantry Regiment family readiness group has recently held for their families, and it was made even more so when 25 of those families with expectant mothers received brand new cribs, which were generously donated by the Delta Children Products corporation.
