Beach Detachment Marines receive award

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - The beach days of summer are over, but the lifeguards who made it possible for countless families to enjoy were recognized for their hard work.

Marine Corps Community Services awarded 24 Marines with beach detachment, Company A, Headquarters and Support Battalion, certificates of appreciation and MCCS team achievement shirts for their outstanding work during the summer at Onslow Beach aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune, Oct. 16.

The Marines were responsible for eight swimmer saves during the summer and successfully kept the beach safe for all patrons.

“This beach has been a place for families to come and enjoy themselves during the summer months,” said John Sollis, the assistant chief of staff with MCCS. “The beach detachment Marines did an amazing job of promoting safe swimming for those families and patrons.”

The Marines answered patrons’ questions and provided swimming tips for a safer time at the beach.

“I’ve had a great time being a part of the beach detachment,” said Sgt. Christina Foresto, a Marine with the beach detachment. “I appreciate what MCCS is doing for all the Marines in the detachment. I had an amazing time this summer.”

The Marines are not primarily lifeguards; all of them were given temporary orders to the beach detachment from other units.

“All of these Marines were sent here via the Fleet Assistance Program,” said Lt. Col. Harry L. Gardner, commanding officer HSB. “Seeing them come together and do such an amazing job is great. They’ve become a team and kept Onslow Beach successful this summer.”

After finishing the summer season with the beach detachment, the Marines are sent back to their primary units.

The Marines' certificates stated the beach detachment Marines dedicated their time keeping Onslow Beach a safe environment for patrons.
