WASHINGTON – Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling remains open with additional security measures in place following today’s tragic event at the Washington Navy Yard, nearby.
JBAB Vice Commander, Air Force Col. Michael E, Saunders said the installation remains open and continues to conduct its national security and other critical missions.
Following a plan developed by JBAB’s Incident Management Team, most military and civilian personnel who live off base were permitted to exit the installation in phases at the end of the workday.
Military members with children at the base and those who live on the installation, but work at other nearby military installations, were permitted to access to the base to reunite with their children or return to their homes for the evening.
The children of parents delayed by traffic; added security measures at the base or involved in supporting the ongoing work at the Navy Yard had their children cared for by JBAB’s Child Development Center and its Child and Youth Program staff. “They will be cared for all night if necessary,” JBAB Commander, Navy Capt. Anthony T. Calandra, stated. By 8 p.m., all of the children had been picked up.
Residents desiring to return home are being granted limited access to the base via the Arnold Gate, located at Malcolm X Avenue and South Capitol Street, Saunders said.
Military and civilian personnel working at JBAB should follow their employer’s guidance with regards to reporting to work, Saunders said. “Each command or unit designates its own list of essential personnel. People are best advised to follow their employer’s policy; guidance or contact their immediate supervisor,” he added.
Calandra cautioned that added security measures at JBAB may delays accessing the base and cause traffic delays on adjacent roadways tomorrow morning.
“As evidenced by our normal robust security measures, the security of the installation and the welfare of its personnel always remains a primary concern. We realize that our added security measures, which enhance our everyday security posture may cause some delays, but we feel confident that most people understand our intent, Calandra said.
“Telework or delayed arrival is recommended tomorrow. Consult your immediate supervisor for guidance and approval,” Calandra concluded.
