HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Children in Helmand province’s Kajaki district welcomed much-needed school supplies they received during an outreach event led by district leaders Sept. 7.

District Gov. Abdul Raziq and Afghan National Army Special Forces soldiers distributed backpacks, book bags, notebooks and writing utensils to more than 60 students at the Kajaki Sofla School.

Raziq toured the school and met with teachers to discuss the school’s current condition and security in the area.

“The current security situation at the school is good,” said Qalam Rasua, a schoolteacher. However, the school needs renovations to accommodate more children and to prepare the school for the rainy season, she added.

The teachers currently use tents to teach additional children when the school’s six classrooms are filled, Rasua explained.

The school staff praised the district governor for the supplies. The governor said he would work to provide more as well as address issues with the facilities, he said.
