HELMAND PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army Special Forces and Afghan Uniformed Police repelled an insurgent attack on their joint patrol Sept. 10 in Helmand province’s Nahr-e Saraj district.

At least four insurgents opened fire on the patrol along Highway 1 in the district’s Yakchal region. Insurgents sporadically fired assault rifles and several mortars, but quickly retreated.

The Afghan security forces approached the area from where their attackers engaged and found a weapons cache. The stockpile included 50 kilograms of homemade explosives and several communication devices possibly used to make bombs, according to the ANASF reports.

Taliban militants are known to use the Yakchal area to bury and hide weapons.

Afghan National Security Forces remain committed to disrupting the insurgents along Highway 1 to promote safe travel for the Afghan people to allow prosperity and development.
