GALVESTON, Texas – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Galveston District’s Pete Perez was promoted to the Senior Executive Service and selected to assume the role of regional business director at the Southwestern Division in Dallas.

“Pete’s promotion to become a member of the SES is a remarkable professional milestone,” said Col. Richard Pannell, commander of the USACE Galveston District. “In this key position, he will become a major link between presidential appointees and the organization’s work force. His extensive managerial background coupled with his knowledge of regional Corps issues makes him the perfect candidate for the job and I have full confidence he will continue to serve this organization well in his new role.”

With nearly three decades of engineering management expertise, Perez will manage the division’s Regional Business Center operations and oversee the Business Technical, Business Management and Business Resources divisions. He will be the lead liaison regarding efforts between regional and functional boards, synchronizing activities with a particular focus concerning regional issues.

Perez currently serves as the deputy district engineer for Programs and Project Management (the highest attainable civilian position in the district, which he assumed in 2011), and is responsible for overseeing approximately $200 million in projects and services that span across 50,000 square miles, encompasses the Texas coast from Louisiana to Mexico. During his time at the USACE Galveston District, he was selected to complete a six-month assignment as the acting director of the Regional Business Directorate at the Southwestern Division (September 2012 to March 2013).

“I am looking forward to returning to the Southwestern Division to lead the Regional Business Directorate,” said Perez. “Having the opportunity to recently serve as the interim acting director provided me with an invaluable experience. During my time at the division, I worked with a talented team to develop a way forward that addresses regional issues and provides long-term solutions.”

Perez previously served as the chief of the USACE Galveston District’s Engineering and Construction Division. While chief, Perez served an eight-month tour in Afghanistan Engineer District-South. Prior to this position, Perez was the former chief of Construction Operations at the Alaska District, held the position of an area engineer in the Southern Area Office, was a resident engineer in the Central Resident Office and was an engineer in the USACE Far East District in Korea. He began his career with the Corps as a project engineer in the Fort Worth District’s San Antonio Area Office.

He was recognized with the 2002 Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Award, earned a 2002 Professional Achievement Award from Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference, received a Department of the Army Superior Civilian Award in 2008 and 2010 and earned the prestigious Bronze de Fleury Medal in 2008. A registered professional engineer in Texas, Perez earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1985 from Texas A&M University, a Master of Science in 1997 from the University of Texas at San Antonio in Environmental Management, is Defense Acquisition Workforce Improvement Act Level II certified and Level III certified in Facilities Engineering.
