TARIN KOT, Afghanistan - Creedence Clearwater Revival was followed by traditional Afghan dance in a fusion of cultures at Eid al Fitr celebrations at Multinational Base – Tarin Kot, Aug. 12.

Nearly 200 Afghan interpreters and ISAF personnel celebrated their camaraderie in a festive atmosphere at the provincial reconstruction team house. Afghan and coalition musicians joined Australian songwriter and political adviser Fred Smith for more than three hours of music, dance and food.

At the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, Muslims enjoy the joyous celebration called Eid al-Fitr or the festival of fast-breaking.

Smith said most of the interpreters at MNB-TK were in their early 20s when they began working with coalition forces five or six years ago.

“They have given us the best years of their lives and have lost mates just as we have,” he said.

“We work with them every day and they are critical for our mission’s success – I always say you are only as good as your interpreter.”

Musicians who joined Smith on stage included Australian soldier Signaller Glen Treasure from the Forces Communication Unit on lead guitar, Jeremy Barr, a U.S. civilian contractor on bass, Chief Mylon Gladden from the U.S. Army on drums and Afghan artists with traditional instruments.

Smith said it was important to help the interpreters celebrate Eid in style.

“It was fantastic to play with Afghan musicians from around the base, and enjoy the rich tradition of their music they are so proud of,” he said.

“Events like this are great for building a community spirit as they give this place a bit of heart and soul and help break down any cultural barriers.”
