HERAT PROVINCE, Afghanistan – Afghan National Army Special Forces (ANASF) soldiers effectively repelled an insurgent ambush, killing five armed insurgents and wounding five more Aug. 15 in Herat province’s Shindad district.

Approximately 15 insurgents attacked the ANASF patrol near the district’s Emeret and Kusa villages Insurgents lobbed a barrage of gun fire using assault rifles and shoulder-fired rockets. The ANASF quickly coordinated their efforts and overwhelmed the attackers. Afghan Local Police (ALP) were also working in the villages, providing the first line of defense for the villagers.

“The Taliban cowards attacked our soldiers and Afghan Local Police, who were only there to ensure peace for our people,” said Shindand District Governor Lal Mohammed. “This attack shows us the truth about the Taliban, that they are liars who continue to target our Afghan citizens.”

An ALP officer was wounded during the attack and transported to Shindad Hospital for treatment and evaluation. The five wounded insurgents were turned over to village officials.

ALP compliment counterinsurgency efforts by assisting and supporting rural areas with limited Afghan National Security Force presence, in order to enable conditions for improved security, governance and development.
