Spartans welcome new commander

FORT STEWART, Ga. – Col. Scott Jackson, a native of South Bend, Ind., took command of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team “Spartans”, 3rd Infantry Division, at a change of command ceremony held at Cottrell Field, July 26.

Col. Douglas Cardinale, the outgoing commander of 2nd ABCT, transferred authority to Jackson during the ceremony, which is a time honored tradition, as well as an opportunity for an incoming commander and the soldiers to pay respect to the outgoing commander.

During the ceremony, the unit’s colors are handed from the outgoing commander to the incoming commander, signifying the transferring of authority over the units involved.

While serving as the3rd Infantry Division’s rear chief of staff, Jackson had many opportunities to witness the Spartan’s ability during their recent deployment to Afghanistan.

“The Spartans before you today enjoy a reputation for discipline, standards, and professionalism, said Jackson. “Doug and his sergeant major are the primary reason why they have that reputation.”

During his speech, Cardinale expressed his sadness over no longer being in charge of the Spartan formation, as well as his pride in the soldiers standing in it.

“I sincerely thank each and every one of you standing on the field today, and those you represent.” said Cardinale. “It has been my honor to be your commander. Stay disciplined. Build that trust, for when our nation calls again- and they will; you must be ready.”

“Scott, I can think of no other who I would rather see in this BCT,” said Cardinale. “God speed to you my friend.”

The ceremony ended with the singing of the 3rd Infantry Division Song and the Army Song.
