The Defense Nuclear Weapons School (DNWS) of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) hosted the third quarter iteration of the Nuclear Weapons Accident/Incident Response Training (NWIRT) course at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM June 4-6.

Over 15 students from across the United States were in attendance representing disciplines including state civil support teams, explosive ordinance disposal, Air National Guard and Army CBRNE functions. The three day course included presentations from the FBI, DOE, FEMA and DHS on subjects ranging from radiological response to nuclear secure transport. Individual modules also included a legal overview, a public affairs overview and crisis communications. There is one more NWIRT course available for FY13 at the DNWS to be held Sept. 10-12. Interested parties should contact the DNWS registrar at (505) 846-5666 for attendance information.

DTRA’s Defense Nuclear Weapons School is a unique entity that provides training in nuclear weapons, nuclear and radiological incident command, control and response, as well as chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and high-yield explosives (CBRNE) modeling for the U.S. Department of Defense and other federal, state and local agencies.
