Hometown hero recognized for outstanding work in the Air Force

JOINT BASE ANDREWS, Md. - Who/What: Denise Tolson was recently selected as one of AFDW’s “Capital Airmen” for 2013. The airmen (service members and civil servants) who are showcased in this initiative have exemplified the Air Force core values of integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all they do. Tolson has an amazing story about her Air Force career, and is excited to share what it means to her to serve her country.

When: Throughout 2013, AFDW Public Affairs will be sending hometown news releases to media outlets in all 50 states and U.S. territories to spread the word about the amazing jobs our airmen are performing in the National Capital Region.

Background on hometown hero:
Tolson is originally from Bel Air, Md., however, she considers Edgewater, Md., home. After earning her high school diploma from Kenwood High School in 1991, Tolson decided to join the Maryland Air National Guard. Since enlisting in 1992, Tolson has worked her way up to the rank of technical sergeant. In addition, she began working full-time for the Air Force District of Washington in 2009. Here she serves with the Air and Expeditionary Force Cell.

As a member of the Maryland ANG, Tolson has traveled the world. While on temporary assignment to Germany last year, she volunteered to help wounded warriors returning to the states. She also participated in the Sabre Strike planning conference in Latvia. This is an annual training event that rotates throughout the Baltic States of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

As a member of AFDW, Tolson has continuously been recognized for her outstanding performance. In addition to being named an AFDW Capital Airman, she was selected as her directorate’s 2012 Outstanding Civilian Employee (civilian program manager). Tolson also earned the award of AFDW Civilian Category III of the Quarter.
