FORT GORDON, Ga. – Soldiers of the 278th Military Police Company, Georgia Army National Guard, are set to deploy to Afghanistan for one year in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
A deployment ceremony for the group of approximately 100 soldiers took place April 6, 2013, at Fort Gordon’s Gym 5, to the well-wishes and applause of senior leaders, family members, and friends.
“It is a testament to the leadership; getting these soldiers ready for deployment,” said Brig. Gen. Joe Jarrard, commanding general of the Georgia Army National Guard, “and I encourage our family members to reach out to the unit throughout the deployment.”
The soldiers’ family members and noncommissioned officer corps were further recognized by Col. Vernon Atkinson, commander of the 78th Homeland Response Force.
“To the family members - a round of applause for what you do,” said Atkinson. “The NCO Corps is outstanding; these are the first-line supervisors that are going to make this mission happen.”
It will be a first deployment for Sgt. James Moore. The 22-year-old NCO has been with the unit since he was a newly enlisted 18-year old. Though she voiced her concern as a parent, Moore’s mother, Denise Holdren, also shared her faith.
“He’s okay,” said Holdren. “I just want a safe return home.”
Safety was the watchword given to the soldiers by Maj. Jonathan Adams, commander of the 170th MP Battalion, as he addressed the formation of troops during the ceremony.
“Be safe in all that you do, and always remember the regimental motto -- assist, protect, and defend.”
