CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. - Marines and sailors with 2nd Supply Battalion, 2nd Marine Logistics Group spent a week in the field here, from Feb. 4 to 7, to train on communications, security and logistical support techniques, which are all key elements for Exercise Rolling Thunder.
Rolling Thunder is a large-scale, bi-annual training operation scheduled for March.
For this year’s evolution of the exercise, Marines from 2nd Supply Bn. will join forces with 10th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division to participate in the three-week event at Fort Bragg, N.C., where the regiment’s artillery batteries will carry out fire missions that aren’t possible or practical aboard Camp Lejeune.
“They’re taking [three battalions] out,” said 2nd Lt. Evan C. Malone, a Leesburg, Va., native and officer who oversaw Marines in the command operation center, or COC. “Fort Bragg has some pretty impressive ranges that offer a lot more opportunities than Camp Lejeune.”
Rolling Thunder is also a unique opportunity for 2nd Supply Bn. to flex its logistical muscle. They will be the logistical combat element for 10th Marine Reg.
In preparation for Rolling Thunder, the battalion received and processed requests from other units aboard Camp Lejeune for repairs and logistical support. It then sent out convoys to support the units and test its ability to run operations while in the field, which will be the unit’s main purpose during Rolling Thunder.
In addition to supporting supply operations, the battalion established a security perimeter around its base of operations and launched patrols throughout the area.
The troops responded to mock ambushes and improvised explosive devices while maintaining communications with the COC. They practiced calling for medical support and coordinated with reinforcements to support their efforts in the field.
“One thing we are focusing on in terms of proficiency is getting our camp set up and running, tracking units, carrying out missions as quickly as possible, and being able to break down efficiently,” said Malone.
The unit will be expected to move to various locations to provide support during Rolling Thunder in March, and still respond to simulated enemy ambushes, IEDs and casualties, said Malone. Speed and efficiency will be essential, and 2nd Supply Bn. is up to the task.
